Choirs are Critical to Worship

— by

While I live will I praise the LORD: I will sing praises unto my God while I have any being. Psalm 146:2

Worship without a choir just isn’t the same as with a choir. The choir plays an often unnoticed role in leading congregational singing; not just hymns, but signalling when to stand, sit or kneel, responses before and after prayer, children’s story, offering etc. Yes, I know it’s possible to have “Praise Team Leaders” but much of the time I find that the singers compete with band members and the congregation are left wondering where they fit in! Many just don’t bother. Do you agree? I’ve too often sat in a congregation and wondered why I could hear no-one around me singing, especially if the words are up on the screen (and big enough for everyone – including your grandma- to see).

Back to choirs, they sing, they express joy together and by doing so encourage that corporate act of worship – congregational singing, singing together. Being of one accord, including everyone. A choir is a unique means of witnessing because anyone with a voice can join in. Yes, we have select choirs where voices are auditioned, but the amateur choir is a great place to go and learn more about music.

What about you? Do you sing with a choir? Do you enjoy it as a social activity or something more? Do you believe that the Choir is critical to worship? Please share your comments below.

#playmusiceveryday – includes singing!
