A Bible-Based Workshop for Bible Believing Church Congregations
This is a fundamental workshop that outlines some of the scriptures that support the understanding of how we should use our voices in corporate worship.

I enjoy using quizzes, so usually begin with a Sing Off – this could extend or replace your regular song service. A theme or topic is given and the congregation organized into two teams. Each team starts singing a song on the given theme, every one can join in, but just sing the chorus or the first verse, the other team has up to 10 seconds to respond with another song on the same theme. The teams go back and forth singing songs that they know until one team repeats a song, or they cannot think of another.
This can be very enjoyable for participants, it is taxing their memory while singing praises to God, old songs and new can be incorporated and everyone can participate. Some themes are almost never ending, so we’ve had to stop singing about “The Cross” for example, after an hour of lively congregational singing. This can be carried out without instrumental accompaniment, as everyone from both teams may join in.
Another Quiz that gets the mind thinking is that of hymn lyrics. I like to do this on the afternoon when visiting with a congregation; in this way, I can switch things around to ensure that the selections are familiar. Too often the hymns and songs presented during worship services do not register meaningfully in our minds. This quiz quotes just a couple of lines from a hymn, which then should be identified by title. Often, participants start singing the hymn and eventually someone from the team comes up with the title.
The interactive presentation “Singing with Understanding” includes several Bible quotations, and admonitions from the Spirit of Prophecy. The principles discussed are then rehearsed through congregational singing. If there are particular hymns that your congregation singing incorrectly, or poorly, this would be a great opportunity for your ministers of music to correct that.
Benefits of Congregational Singing include:
- Unity and Fellowship: Singing together fosters a sense of unity and fellowship among believers (Colossians 3:16).
- Praise and Thanksgiving: It allows the congregation to express praise, thanksgiving, and adoration to God through music (Psalm 95:1-2, Psalm 100:1-2).
- Instruction and Edification: Songs convey messages that instruct and edify, teaching spiritual truths and encouraging growth in faith (Ephesians 5:19).
- Spiritual Encouragement: Singing lifts spirits, offers comfort, and brings joy even in challenging times (Acts 16:25).
- Fosters Devotion: Singing helps to create an atmosphere conducive to devotion and reverence in worship services.
- Teaching and Remembering: Songs convey doctrinal truths and aid in remembering important spiritual lessons.
- Unites Hearts: Congregational singing unites hearts in praise and prayer, promoting a sense of harmony and love among believers.
- Spiritual Refreshment: It brings spiritual refreshment and uplifts the soul, contributing to personal spiritual growth.
Finally, congregational singing isn’t merely about musical expression; it’s a vital element in spiritual worship, teaching, and community building within religious gatherings. It serves as a means to deepen one’s connection to God, encourage spiritual growth, and create a shared experience of faith among believers.
Every congregation has their own favourite hymns. I still can name particular congregations that sing a particular hymn with an extra swing, extra emotion in the air. You can tell that they are thinking about the words as they sing, they are singing from the heart and you can feel God’s presence in this very room. Let me help your congregation find their favourite hymns, or take you through a Song Writing Workshop (120 minutes is required). Contact DrDiana for more information.
