Vocal Lessons and Vocal Coaching

— by

Please do a search and find out the differences for yourself. Vocal lessons, voice lessons or singing lessons are focused on getting you to develop good singing technique. Often this is for the purpose of entering examinations or competition, but I will ask you what your goals are as some people take lessons as a personal hobby. Indeed, singing can be a great stress reliever, although for students NOT interested in examination, I will still encourage you to perform and will work towards this.

Singing lessons involve helping you to explore your voice – range dynamics. Exercises are set to help you understand and practice how to get a good sound, consistently on all the notes that you sing. Then we apply this in actual songs. As your teacher, I will offer specific suggestions regarding your repertoire (the songs that you sing), provide the written music scores for you to study and provide playlists to get you started listening to specific famous artistes. I

In singing lessons, I also try to incorporate ear training, some basic theory and also stage presence, because I believe that these things are important. Lessons are geared towards the needs of the individual learner and their stated interests. Please refer to my studio policy.

The singing coach focuses more on the presentation of material that you already know. You should already have some idea about vocal technique and have prepared the songs ready for performance, examination or competition. I will listen and decide the best way to help you with any noticeable areas of concern, whether stated by you or not. I will discuss your preparation, technique and intentions throughout the presentation of your selected repertoire. Generally, I will take you through some song analysis with questions such as “Where is the climax of this song?” “What is the central message?” “What is the most difficult part?” “What is the range of this song?” “How are you expressing the message of the song with your gestures, facial expressions?” and similar. Coaching sessions also include the psychological aspects of singing such as nervousness, knowing what to do if you make an error, costume, movement and stage presence.

Coaching sessions are a type of 1 – off, as they can be spaced out over the period of 6 months. By the end of a coaching session, you should have a clear idea of what to work on, but you’ll need to go and find these resources yourself. When you feel that you have made improvement, you can book another session with me (876-416-2311) and hopefully we’ll be able to see improvements! Generally 30 minutes is sufficient, but that may depend on exactly what you are preparing to do.

Singing lessons, by contrast are set weekly and I expect you to carve out the time for daily practice as well as meet with me regularly as agreed. If there are challenges, this must be made apparent ASAP as scheduled times cannot always be adjusted. I provide you with a notebook, pencil, Audio file with your vocal exercises, music scores for the songs we select and a YouTube playlists as needed. I may also suggest supplemental reading, to suit your stated musical interests.
