Perform as you learn

— by

I’m always curious about the opinions of others, but as a Music teacher I believe that it is important to perform as you learn to play an instrument.  The danger is that you will never think that yiu are good enough to perform in front of anyone other than you mum! Even siblings can get tired of your passions when they don’t share them! I’m reminded of a boat trip in Zimbabwe with around 40 ppl. After watching the bird enthusiasts with their zoom lenses, and looking at some beautifully captured shots, pausing at every possibility, we realises  half the group didn’t have cameras, and while interesting at first we were getting bored. Finally someone voiced an opinion to move on to the next destination, which was heartily welcomed by at least 15 voices. We laughed realizing that some spouses, close friends were just patiently enduring!

Don’t let your performance be like that! Understand that a performance is like an iceberg- only a small part shows- not the hours of technical practice, memorization and analysis that you’ve been through yo be able to interpret the music! If you’ve ever sat through those boring musical performances by children, don’t blame them- it’s the teacher! A performance should have a variety of repertoire suitable for young learners that they can perform ACCURATELY, EXPRESSIVELY and varied enough for the listener to enjoy. It should of course be fun for the participants too.
