Joyful Service: Strength in Song

— by

It’s not always easy to finish something that you started, especially when it’s not going as expected!  However, ŵe need to be committed to God’s work. As long as you are convinced that us your calling, the task God has set before you, then you will find the strength to continue.

Any existing choir in this day and age is to be lauded. What a joy to have a group of committed singers who continue despite life’s challenges! It only makes sense to consider what keeps these singers coming back, what is the motivation for commitment? What is the support the blessing that they receive- individually or collectively?

A choral retreat gives a group of singers the opportunity to pause and reflect. It should be a time of spiritual renewal, but also evaluation and analysis. We look back over past service in order to move forward. This may involve a SWOT analysis, elections, testimonies, and more. I believe it should also include technical work – how can we improve with the voices available?

The suggested theme Strength in Song aims to capture some of these ideas and inspire choristers to continue- whether or not they can attend the retreat. The following texts might offer further insights.

  1. Psalm 100:2 – “Serve the Lord with gladness! Come into his presence with singing!”
    • This verse captures the joy and spirit of serving through music.
  2. Nehemiah 8:10 – “Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”
    • Emphasizes finding strength and encouragement in joy.
  3. Psalm 95:1-2 – “Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song.”
    • Reflects the joy and devotion in worship through song.
  4. Philippians 4:4 – “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!”
    • Encourages consistent joy, a crucial aspect of joyful service.
  5. 1 Chronicles 16:23 – “Sing to the Lord, all the earth; proclaim his salvation day after day.”
    • Highlights the role of music in sharing faith and serving others joyfully.

These scriptures collectively reinforce the themes of joyfulness, strength, and service through song, providing a profound biblical foundation for any choral retreat.
